Scene It
Tabitha was in a mood. She palmed her face and smeared her auburn bangs away from her eyes. She blinked, blearily beating back her groggy stupor while trying to figure out what her mom was going on about.
"And just where did you get that?" Mom asked, pointing at my chest.
I followed her gesture to the shirt I had slept in. 'The Breakfast Club' stared back at her. "Oh, it's Floyd's. I kind of stole it."
Mom crossed her arms. Apparently, that was somehow the wrong answer. "And since when do you wear a boy's shirt to bed?"
"I don't know. Floyd likes watching old movies. They're from like the 1980s or something. I watched The Breakfast Club with him, so I got the t-shirt."
"Well, are there any other t-shirts I need to know about?"
I narrowed my eyes and glanced at the window. The sun was only just peeking over the sill of my second-story bedroom window. If the sun wasn't up, I shouldn't be either, I thought. "Can't the love-life interrogations wait until after breakfast?"
Mom marched to the window and threw back the curtains. "Sure! Right after you tell me why there's a Kaiju on the lawn screaming your legal name."
"Uh... Do I have some kind of illegal name that it should be using instead?"
"That's not the point, and you know it!"
I fought myself free of my comforter. As my feet swung down to the floor, I discovered a fatality; I wore a single sock; the bed had consumed another one. I hugged my chest and scurried to the window, Mom stepping aside with upturned palms like a game show girl revealing a prize.
"Tabitha!" bellowed the Kaiju. It was a forty-foot mechanical humanoid with its hands over its head. Between its hand was a blue-gray car. "What in the world is that all about?" That's when I noticed the music. "Wait..."
Mom nudged me out of the way. "Is that song coming from the Kaiju? That sounds like... Yeah, it's In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel."
My grin and my blush fought a territorial battle as each aimed to occupy my face. "Mom... Meet Floyd. It appears that he's standing outside my window with a boom box above his head."
