Read Me First

Early on, I discovered a new way to apply critique. It proved more powerful than I could have expected. That lesson was this:

When we apply the critiques that our work receives, it can help our work improve; when we apply the critiques meant for others, it can help our work evolve.

Why is that? Well, when writers and editors provide us with feedback, they largely remark on what we’re doing and how we’re going about it. Basically, it’s an adjustment of what we’re already doing. Other writers have different strengths and weaknesses. And, should we examine the feedback that they receive, it’s possible to gain insights we had yet to consider for our own work.

Most of my craft was self-taught, some of which I advanced by discovering and investigating this very approach to critique. To date, I have provided little critique to others. I didn’t believe I was intellectually equipped to assist anyone in a meaningful way. That’s no longer the case.

‘Tendered Critiques’ is just that—feedback that I’ve given to other writers. While the feedback is aimed at helping a specific writer, the advice is portrayed in a way so that others might more easily pick it apart and apply it to their own work.

The titles suggest each critique’s focus. The number of entries will increase over time.

I hope this helps you further your own development as a writer and storyteller.

Happy writing!

Sincerely,
JT
